Swimming!

Yikes, I haven’t written in awhile! I was planning on just deleting the blog, since I don’t have much time to write, but it entertains my boyfriend, so I guess I’ll keep it!

First things first—Karen does not hate me. In fact, she’s teaching me to swim! But more on that later.

It’s taken me awhile to settle into my post-marathon routine. It’s very different that my marathon training routine. On one hand, I have more time, since I’m not doing 20+ mile anymore. On the other hand, I am leading a slower pace group for the TC 10 Mile, so it takes longer just to get around Lake of the Isles. Plus, anytime I’m not running, strength-training or doing Pilates, I’m on my bike. And now I have one more thing to try to squeeze in somewhere—swimming!

I had planned on starting swim lessons this winter, since I’d like to do a triathlon next summer. I know how to move and stay afloat in the water, but I don’t really know how to swim. Karen had worked with me once before, and so I asked her if she wanted to get together and swim in Lake Calhoun. I think the 90+ degree weather helped to sway her. We ran about 2 miles around Calhoun, and then headed to the beach.

Karen was awesome—she had me learn the crawl stroke and the butterfly stroke. She was full of praise, which is probably why I’m hooked on swimming now. I absolutely loved it. I had a minute of prissiness when I first went under in the lake, but all in all, the lake water wasn’t that bad. I had such a blast swimming. We were going to go again on Sunday after the “long” run, but thunderstorms ruined our plan. Now, we’re going on Tuesday. I can’t wait. I am now obsessed—move over, mountain climbing!

I’m already planning on when I’ll start lessons at the YWCA, how long would it take me until I could try a Masters’ workout, what could have been if I would’ve stuck with swimming lessons as a 5 year old…oh, well. I’ll obviously never know. But for right now, I am excited to swim!
